Band : Frank Turner For a comprehensive history on English bard Frank Turner, check the review I did on his 2009 album Poetry Of The Deed, posted 17/09/2009 (skip the short review on the Love Ire & Song album). Some extra info on that album? It sprouted the two singles “The Road” (hailed by BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe as “hottest record in the world today” on July 14, 2009) and “Poetry Of The Deed”. The iTunes deluxe version of the album included 5 bonus acoustic tracks as well as the video clip to “The Road”. In support of the album Turner and his support band composed of Ben Lloyd (electric guitar), Matt Nasir (piano, keyboards, backing vocals), Tarrant Anderson (bass) and Nigel Powell (drums, backing vocals) spent an incredible year of touring everywhere, playing to overflowing festival crowds, supporting Green Day at Wembley Stadium, and winning a prestigious Kerrang! Award. As a taster for an upcoming album, the band spent 3 days during September of last at London's The Church Studios to record the 5 songs on this EP, and as you can see from the release date, it was well in time for Christmas (and it's only because of a series of unfortunate circumstances that this review wasn't posted earlier). By the way, of the five songs only the EP-opening “I Still Believe” will actually be used on the forthcoming album, making the organ-driven “Pass it Along”, the completely acoustic shortie “Rock And Roll Romance”, and the more “normal” Turner tunes “To Absent Friends” and “The Next Round” exclusive to the EP, making it therefore worthwhile to be picked up by those music fans who've already come in contact with the artist's peculiar mix of Folk and Rock. Those unfamiliar to Turner's poetic outings who're willing to learn, should listen to the songs posted at (www.) myspace.com/frankturner (no songs off the EP, but enough off previous albums). 90/100 Tony. |
