Review : CD

The second album from Lunar Dunes is an impressive set of hypnotic music that fuses rock, kraut, triphop, jazz, funk, ambience, dub and good fun. On Galaxsea, Lunar Dunes consists of Adam Blake on guitar, Larry Whelan on keys and saxophones, Krupa Pattni  on vocals, Hami on drums, Ian Blackaby on bass and Julia Thornton on harp. I consider Galaxseato be the mellower of the two CD's and indeed that's the case, but it's just as cool as From Above (read review 13/03/2008). Bleeping sounds, booming bass and percussion dominates most of the album but electric guitar floats alongside as well playing sparse, enchanting melodies. Trip hop paced… dreamy… still psychedelic. Standouts include “Ayaz” which is a totally spaced out, oddball sort of kraut-psychedelia tune, the vibrant “Pharaoh’s dream” and “Free to do” are equally spacey and the more guitar oriented tracks of the set. The female vocal delivery reminds me of Brainticket at times. The album ends with 2 quiet, moving and beautifully spiritual pieces, “Eastern promise” with breathtaking harp and “Off world beacon” leaving the listener to just lay there and absorb the stars at the galaxsea. But like any good psychedelic kraut rock, their palette are filled with numerous colors, as touches of intriguing instruments swirl in and out of the mix.

While this might be too far out of the galaxsea for some people, I just love the stuff.
