Band : Pÿlon Pÿlon is a trad doom band with christian lyrics from Switzerland that have built themselves squarely in the Candlemass/Count Raven/Saint Vitus mold. Uploading my first impressions of a Pÿlon-CD (Doom-02/02/2011)in February this year, we have not even reached autumn and I see myself having a take at already their second Pÿlon-album this year. The brandnew compositions definitely are mature, well done and some of them a bit more dynamic than others, which is welcome. Matt Brand (vocals, guitars), Jan Thomas (bass, vocals) and Andrea J. Tinner (drums) know how to write good and catchy melodies and never overtax the listener with too many intricacies in it . Pacewise they mostly operate in the gloom-paced regions, but dip into calmer classical sounding instrumentals or raise into more epic metal passages enough to build up the mentioned dynamics that loosen up the songs a little bit. Especially when they utilize this formula they succeed in creating gripping and haunting songs, with the best examples being “Hollow sky”, “The worm within”, “In from the funeral fields”, “Gravestar” and the more powerful “Death is all around”, while the other songs either do not stand out much (without being degraded to pure filler material, though). The Candlemass cover “Somewhere in nowhere” (of the Tales Of Creation-album) fits right in with the rest of the songs. Matt Brand still lacks a bit of power to produce more of a presence within the songs. In any case, Armoury Of God is a solid album, which will cater to the fans they already have, yet will hardly bring anybody new into their fan base, also because they do not show enough signs of actually evolving as a band, but rather play it safe, you be the judge. 85/100 Cosmicmasseur. |
