Band : Motherboar Based in Boston, Massachusetts, this quintet comprised of lead singer Kenny Irving, guitarists Brian Connor & Andrew Doherty, bassist Joe Grotto and drummer Benny Grotto, has apparently been around since 2005...but only now do they come out with an official album (and actually, I have no positive proof of the band ever releasing anything on their own before). With only 8 tracks and a duration of barely just 26 minutes (oh wait, that ain't right: see later), Motherboar nevertheless brings down a powerful calling card. Stylistically, the combination of down-tuned Hardcore and Metal/ Rock with Psychedelic/ Progressive elements puts the band in a category with fellow Bostonians Isis, or even Mastodon. The guitars certainly display numerous wacky playful bits and ends, as well as great pace changes and breakdowns. Center piece of the album is a 3-part passage consisting of the songs “Inhale”, Amphibious”, and “The Beast Becomes The Servant” (and regrettably I cannot tell you what the complete length of theis “suite” is, as something went wrong with our download, cutting parts off the middle and closing song). But the vocals are quite different...and darn difficult to explain as well...being a mid-high pitched shout rather than a scream, with a hoarseness which inflicts a sore throat on each and every one just by listening to it! Oh well, maybe I ain't explaining too well, and you'd better check out the 3 songs posted at (www.) myspace.com/motherboar. This album being available in vinyl version, I guess that'll be what I'm gonna try to get next time I come past the local record store! Because personally, I like this a lot...so much so, that I've put the album into my year-lists! Weird me!!! 98/100 Tony. |
